Grant Amplifies Student Passion for Music at Haber Oaks

Haber Oaks received a $5,000 grant from the Guitar Center Music Foundation (GCMF) to enhance its music room by purchasing an electric drum set for students interested in music. Haber Oaks teacher Michael Schneider and his students started the music room during lunch, when they spent time exploring music and learning to play instruments.
“Students enrolled in Haber Oaks face unique challenges that can make everyday life more difficult than their peers. Providing a space where these students can learn and practice music creates an environment where they can build confidence and grow in multiple aspects of their life,” said Michael Schneider, Haber Oaks teacher.
Schneider’s time teaching music quickly expanded as more students wanted to learn how to play a guitar or piano. The space had immediate impacts on students who wanted to learn new skills or practice.
“I enjoy starting my day with Mr. Schneider and getting to play guitar every day,” said Cameron Ritchie, Haber Oaks student. “When I get the chance to play, it sets me up for a good day afterwards.”
In addition to string instruments, students were also interested in learning how to play the drums. Due to the noise of a classic drumset, Schneider looked for an electric drumset, which can be played with headphones or small speakers to limit noise that would impact other classrooms while allowing students to practice.
Schneider applied for a grant from the Guitar Center Music Foundation. The GCMF is an organization that provides instrument grants and donations to schools and music education programs to keep music accessible for all students. After multiple rounds of interviews, Haber Oaks was selected to receive a grant.
"Receiving this grant from the Guitar Center Music Foundation plays a huge role in the opportunities we can provide to students who want to learn about music," said Julie Duncan, Coordinator of Off Campus Programs at Haber Oaks. "We have been able to purchase high-quality musical equipment that can allow students to practice music without disrupting other spaces or classes we have at Haber Oaks."
Schneider saw immediate growth and interest in students who wanted to learn or practice the drums. Marissa Mauger practices outside of school but wanted a chance to play with musicians at her school.
“Having this music equipment available at school helps me to express myself through songs I like and continue to practice new music,” said Marissa Mauger.
As the program continues to grow, Schneider plans to provide students with new instruments and time to practice with others so they can learn and pursue their passion in music.
“The grant from the Guitar Center Music Foundation and the support from everyone at Haber Oaks makes it possible for our students to experience the joy that music can create for all,” said Michael Schneider.
