SHIELD Testing

The district will offer free COVID-19 screening testing through SHIELD Illinois for students and staff. As we are still finalizing details, we anticipate this beginning the week of October 11. This will be an OPT-IN ONLY program; it is NOT mandatory. By default your student will be opted-out unless you complete the OPT-IN FORM below and submit it to We are anticipating the tests will be available one day each week in each of the four buildings (Haber at CLS) during school hours. The day of the week and the designated area in the building have yet to be determined.

SHIELD testing is a saliva-based PCR test created by the University of Illinois. The test consists of depositing (spitting) a sample of saliva into a tube. The sample is sent out for analysis to test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID-19 virus. Note: Samples collected are not used for research purposes and are disposed of after results are confirmed. To learn more about the SHIELD test, visit: The McHenry County Department of Health has declared the SHIELD testing the ‘gold standard’ of PCR testing.

We know you may have further questions, please review the FAQ below prior to opting-in to the program.

The deadline to opt-in to SHIELD testing is Wednesday, October 6 at 3:00 p.m. so SHIELD has enough time to set up the test.

After opting-in, a schedule will be developed at the building level and your student will be assigned a recurring appointment date and time via the student’s district email account.
