In the Event of School Closing

Severe Inclement Weather

In the rare case of severe inclement weather that may result in a school closing, parents should listen to or contact one of the following local media sources for the most current information.  The radio stations are:  WAIT 850AM, WGN 720AM, WMAQ 670AM, WMCW HARVARD, WBBM 780AM, STAR 105.5 FM, 94.7FM, and TV stations are:  WMAQ CHANNEL 5, WGN-TV CHANNEL 9 and CLTV NEWS. District 155 will use the Instant Alert® automated calling system from Honeywell to contact parents with urgent messages such as school cancellations.  For further information:  www.d155.org or www.d155.org/pr and click on Instant Alert® for Schools.

If school remains open during winter weather conditions, it is always the decision of the individual parents whether or not to send their child to school.

Tornado Procedures

PRHS has procedures in place for both a tornado watch and a tornado warning.  A tornado watch occurs when weather conditions could produce a tornado.  The school is notified of a tornado watch by radio from the sheriff’s office.  During a tornado watch, the school monitors the weather but classes continue as normal and students are dismissed on schedule.

A tornado warning occurs when the school has been notified of an actual tornado sighting.  If the sighting poses a threat to the school, the tornado alarms will sound, and the students and staff move to areas designated safe in the building until an “all clear” has been issued.

It is possible that the tornado warning procedures will take place during lunch hours, school dismissal and after school activities.  Should a tornado warning occur during these times, a student will be released only if a parent comes to pick him/her up.
