Criteria for Publication

Belonging to Wolf Prints gives you lots of opportunities to improve your writing.  Take advantage of all the tools and times for peer editing you have available: email the listserv, attend the meetings, talk with the editors, conference individually with the sponsor, and/or trade articles with other staff writers. 

From the Staff Box:

“Wolf Prints encourages freelance writing and letters to the editor.  The sponsor and editors reserve the right to edit such writings without altering writers’ meanings.  Letters to the editor must be signed.”

As space can be limited, articles may be denied publication when necessary. 

All submissions should demonstrate the following characteristics:

~ excellent grammar

~ unbiased, factual reporting

~ opinions based on factual evidence

~ appropriate (tone, language) for a high school audience

~ signed by author

~ stylistically interesting

~ on time!

Tips:

~ Use a strong lead: one sentence under 25 words that answers 5 W’s and H.

~ Use inverted pyramid: crucial information at the beginning, followed by specifics.

~ Use active voice, strong verbs, and simple sentences.

~ Use sensory imagery.

~ Use a clever phrase or good quotation to conclude.

Formatting Articles

• 12 point Times New Roman font
• Single-spaced
• Saved as a Microsoft Word (.doc) file or a Rich Text File (.rtf)
• Name it as TopicFirstL                          Examples: SpiritBreJ            RowingNicoleB

Formatting Pictures with Adobe Photoshop

• Crop the picture – leave head room!
• From the Image Menu:
• Mode to Grayscale
• Adjust Brightness/Contrast – To print well, it should look lighter than you think
• Size
• change width / height to approx same size as it will appear in the paper
• make the resolution 300 pixels/inch
• Save as . . .             
• Name it something helpful (people’s names or the club title) and
• Make sure it’s jpeg (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe) format
