         Student Involvement - Off Stage

In order for a student to be behind the scenes in a performance, certain criteria must be met.  This includes filling out an tech form, progress report, and code of conduct contract.  At Prairie Ridge, we believe that any students interested in being behind the scenes, on a tech crew, are welcome.  As long as you have a strong work ethic, we will find a place for you.  It is also a huge advantage to understand the roles of the tech crews before becoming involved on stage

Some of the tech crews include:

  • Set design and building - These students work on creating the back drops for performances.  These back drops may include building a town or the interior of a house.  Students on this crew also paint, design large set pieces, and make art.  They may also be asked to maneuvre these pieces during the performances.
  • Lighting - These students work in the booth.  Students on the light crew will learn how to position and hang stage lights, change their colors, and program the light board for a performance.  Students will be trained on using both the stationary and motorized lights.  Well-trained students can be asked to work in the booth for non-department functions; these functions usually offer a stipend for student services.
  • Sound - These students also work in the booth.  Students on the sound crew will learn how to hang microphones, set up hand-held microphones, and set up wireless microphones.  Students will be trained on the sound board for performances.  Well-trained students can be asked to work in the booth for non-department functions; these functions usually offer a stipend for student services.
  • Videography - This newest addition of the tech crews will allow students to video performances from different angles, piece together the best performance clips, and eventually create a DVD of the performance.  Students who have knowledge of the light and/or sound boards will be more proficient on this crew.
  • Costuming - Students involved in costuming may be asked to organize actors and actresses costumes, shop, come up with creative ideas for clothing that can't be found, and maybe even sew.
  • Properties - Students involved in properties may be asked to help actors and actresses find props (small objects used, held or set up on stage), shop, and come up with creative ideas for items that can't be found.
  • Makeup - Students involved in makeup will be trained to put stage makeup and hair styles on actors and actresses to help identify their characters' ages.  Techniques might include beautiful women, dirty hobos, farmers, elderly citizens, Asian ladies, etc.  Students will learn the brands of makeup for stage, how to appropriately color hair, and how to keep makeup looking fabulous throughout a show.
