Science Courses For Seniors

Advanced Placement Biology 325-326: 2 semesters; 10 periods
Prerequisite: Biology, Chemistry, Physics

This is a college level science course offered to those students who have successfully completed a year of biology, chemistry and physics. The course emphasizes the biochemical and evolutionary similarities and differences among living organisms and methods of their continuance. Text and laboratory materials are freshman college level. Lab work is extensive. The students may receive college credit and/or placement in biology upon successfully completing this course and taking a placement exam.

Advanced Placement Chemistry 327-328: 2 semesters; 10 periods
Prerequisite: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
This is a college level accelerated course offered to those who have successfully completed a year of biology, chemistry and physics. This course is designed to be a survey of chemistry comparable to a typical freshman-level college course in both scope and depth. Emphasis is placed on problem solving and quantitative skills in both laboratory and classroom phases. The students may receive college credit and/or advanced placement in chemistry upon successfully completing this course and taking a placement exam.

Anatomy and Physiology 315/316: 1 semester; 5 periods
Students will study the structure and function of the tissues, organs and systems within the human body. Through laboratory activities, research, case studies, class discussions, videos and lectures students will learn how the major body systems work, how systems within the body work together to achieve homeostasis, and how disease affects the normal functions of organs and systems. Some topics discussed in this course include the skeletal system, the muscular system, the circulatory system, the respiratory system, the nervous system and the five senses. If you are fascinated by the human body, if you want to understand how you “work”, if you are interested in a career in medicine, nursing or health related fields…you’ll find it here.

Honors Environmental Science 331-332: 2 semesters; 7 periods

Prerequisite:  Physics or concurrent with Physics and teacher recommendation
This laboratory and field-based course draws from a number of sciences concerned with the natural environment. Students will learn about Earth’s ecosystems and the effects of man’s involvement in them. Students will investigate the scientific and social aspects of environmental pollution and natural balance. Lab experiments, case studies and outdoor activities will include air quality testing along with water and soil analysis. If you like the Earth and are interested in it’s natural processes… take this class.

Physics 313-314: 2 semesters; 7 periods;
Prerequisite: Chemistry, Advanced Algebra

Students will investigate physical phenomena in the universe around us. Areas of study are: measurement, motion, force, gravitation, energy, heat, light, electricity and magnetism. If you’ve ever wondered…

Why diamonds sparkle?

What happens to an airplane when it is struck by lightning?

Why you heard a sonic boom around the time of 9/11?

If you are interested in … making a catapult to launch pumpkins, protecting an egg as it crashes into the ground from the third floor, playing in a physics band with your own homemade instrument, and going to Great America to see why you won’t fall out of an upside-down roller coaster… then this is the class for you.

Science and Society 317/318: 1 semester; 5 periods
This discussion and project-based course will immerse students in current science-related issues. Students will learn how to appropriately research to investigate topics of interest and how best to present their findings to others. Topics of study will include nano-technology, stem cell research, global warming and the human genome project. If you are interested in current events, you like to use and understand technology, and you want to better understand the impact of science on our society…here’s your class.
