Trojan Chess Team Outmaneuvers Competition
Junior John Wollney took home ninth place at Board 2, for Cary-Grove's highest individual honor, while his teammates finished impressively at their respective boards. A complete list of individual team members and boards is below.
As a team, Cary-Grove's first appearance ever "in the ropes"--the area reserved for the state's top six teams--ended with a victory over State 6A Champions, Barrington High School. This was followed up with a victory against this year's overall Whitney Young, the IHSA's overall 2nd winner.
This is the first state championship for Cary-Grove's chess team, but with all eleven members returning next year, the team is poised for another strong run. The current team is made up of seven juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen.
"I'm proud of all of our chess players at Cary-Grove," said third year coach Peter Spizzirri. "Our goal next year is to win the overall IHSA title outright."
