Intermediate Algebra

Synopsis:         

Intermediate Algebra (formerly Transition to College Math) is the follow-up course to both Applied Algebra and Applied Geometry and is equivalent to "Applied Algebra 2."  Material presented in this course from the textbook and from other sources will presented at a slower pace to help prepare you for advanced algebra courses at CLS or in college.  Trigonometry will be covered and applications of intermediate algebra topics will be discussed frequently.  Preparation for ACT/college placement exams will also be part of this course.

Supplies:         

1.     Spiral notebook for class notes (approx. 150 pages or more)

2.     Scientific or graphing calculator (REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENTS)

3.     Class text:  Elementary and Intermediate Algebra:  A Combined Course by Larson and  Hostetler (YOU WILL NEED YOUR BOOK FOR ALL CLASS SESSIONS. WORKSHEETS WILL BE RARELY USED.)

Grading:   

Grades will be determined by calculating percentages from total points (rounded to the nearest whole number) using the grading scale below.

                              92.5 - 96.4      ....    A             69.5 - 72.4      ....    C-

                              89.5 -  92.4     ....    A-            66.5 - 69.4      ....    D+

                              86.5 - 89.4      ....    B+           62.5 - 66.4      ....    D

                              82.5 - 86.4      ....    B             59.5 - 62.4      ....    D-

                              79.5 - 82.4      ....    B-            59.4 & Below      F

                              76.5 - 79.4      ....    C+

                   

Homework policy:         

STUDENTS WHO OBTAIN A HOMEWORK PERCENTAGE OF LESS THAN 60% FOR ANY QUARTER WILL FAIL THAT QUARTER.

                                             

                   

Make-up work:   

Make-up work is the responsibility of the individual.  You must inform me of a time convenient to you for completion of any missed test or quiz.  Missed tests, quizzes, or homework which are not made up in one week from the date of absence will receive a grade of zero.

Final Exams:        

Any senior who passes both the 3rd and 4th quarters and who earns a homework grade of 90% or higher during the 4th quarter shall be exempt from the 2nd semester final exam.

Tardies:    

A student will be considered tardy to class if that student is not in the classroom when the bell finishes ringing.  The consequences for repeated tardies will follow the policy found in the student handbook.

Classroom Rules

1.  RESPECT your own learning time by having all appropriate materials and being in your seat when the bell rings.

2.  RESPECT the rules and the facilities of the school.

3.  RESPECT the learning time of others.

4.  RESPECT other people (your teacher, classmates, etc.) when they are speaking.

5.  RESPECT the personal space of others.

6.  RESPECT the beliefs of other people.

 

Homework Grading Criteria

3 ....     Between 90% and 100% of problems attempted, all work shown

2 ....     Between 75% and 90% of problems attempted, all work shown

1 ....     Between 50% and 75% of problems attempted and/or work missing

0 ....     Between 0% and 50% of problems attempted and/or no work shown

REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST HAVE A HOMEWORK PERCENTAGE OF 60% OR ABOVE TO PASS A PARTICULAR QUARTER!!!!
