Is He Dead? is an previously unpublished and unproduced play. In researching Twain, Shelley Fisher Fishkin of Stanford University descovered the manuscript and fell in love with the script. Through her work and with the collaboration of the very talented contemporary playwright David Ives (of All in the Timing fame) the play finally received its world premiere at the Lyceum Theatre in New York on December 9, 2007, nearly 100 years after it was written. The story follows the talented, but almost broke, French painter, Jean-Francois Millet. In an effort to increase the value of his work, Millet, with the encouragement of his good friends, fakes his own death and passes himself off as his twin sister, the Widow Tillou. |
