Game #1:  Tuesday, Nov. 18th, 2008 @ Antioch

Trojans Win Opener

CG - 56        Antioch - 52      Record: 1 - 0  (0 - 0)

The Trojans opened their season with a hard fought win on the road over the Sequoits.  Though they had the game well in hand most of the way, CG had to stave off a furious rally during the deciding quarter to secure the victory.  The Trojan defense came up big all game long forcing a total of 28 turnovers for Antioch.  The Sequoits didn't help their cause as they shot a mere 16 for 33 from the charity stripe for 49% and hit absolutely nothing from beyond the 3-point line finishing 0 for 12.  Meanwhile, the Trojans connected on five 3-pointers and hit 9 of their 16 free throws.  At the half the Trojans and Sequoits were deadlocked in rebounds, but in the second half CG was outrebounded by 12 to end up losing the battle of the boards 50-38.  However, CG managed to garner 14 assists and 14 steals to aid their cause.   Despite the lack of fluency on offense and aggression on the boards, the Trojans managed to stay in control of the game throughout.  They led 16-10 after one period, 35-25 at the half, and 48-34 after three.  The Trojans were led by junior Liz Bart with 14 points, including two 3's, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals; senior Tori Sandstrom with 12 points, including two 3's, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, and 3 steals; sophomore Meg Straumann with 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals; junior Christina Bear with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal; junior Karen Serowka with 5 points, including a 3, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists; and sophomore Claire Jakubicek with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1block, and 2 steals.  Next up for the lady Trojans is Streamwood on Friday night in the opening game of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament.

Game #2:  Friday, Nov. 21st @ Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament

Trojans Stifle Sabres

CG - 61        Streamwood - 33      Record: 2 - 0  (0 - 0)

The Trojans handled Streamwood easily Friday night in Charger country and took a step up from their first contest in all phases of the game.  They did their usual thing defensively forcing 36 Sabre turnovers which included 24 steals by the Trojans.  CG also connected on four 3-pointers, hit 19 of 28 free throws, amassed 13 assists, and outscored their opponent 30 to 10 in the paint.  Leading the way was Claire Jakubicek with 21 points (11 of 11 from the line), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 5 steals.  Following her was Tori Sandstrom with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals.  Then, it was Meg Straumann with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 8 steals.  Also contributing was Christina Bear with 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 1steal along with Karen Serowka with 3 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals.   Cary-Grove jumped out to an early lead behind Jakubicek's 13 first quarter points 23-14.  They headed into the locker room at the half up 40-20.  After three periods, the score stood 52-24.  Next up for the lady Trojans is a tough Palatine team on Saturday night.

Game #3:  Saturday, Nov. 22nd @ Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament

Trojans Punish Pirates

CG - 52        Palatine - 39     Record: 3 - 0  (0 - 0)

The Trojans put on a clinic for most the game Saturday night especially on the defensive side of the ball.  Once again, their suffocating pressure spelled doom for an opponent as they forced 27 turnovers, 19 of which were steals for the Trojans.  CG connected on two 3-pointers, made 14 of 19 free throws, dished out 8 assists, and outscored the Pirates 28 to 14 in the paint.  The contest remained close throughout until the Trojans decided enough was enough and poured it on in the fourth period.  They led 16-14 after one, 28-26 at the half, and 34-31 at the end of three.  It was in the final frame that they outscored the Pirates 18-8 to clinch the victory.  It was, by far, the best game of the young season for the Trojans and a huge step up from the previous two games.  Pacing CG was Christina Bear with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals followed by Claire Jakubicek with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 5 steals.  Aiding in the cause was Tori Sandstrom with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks, and 3 steals.  Meg Straumann did her part as well with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, and 5 steals.  Liz Bart chipped in too with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals.  It was a total team effort once again.  CG's next opponent is a highly skilled and disciplined Lake Zurich team Monday night.

Game #4:  Monday, Nov. 24th @ Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament

Trojans Lose to Bears

CG - 32        Lake Zurich - 45      Record: 3 - 1   (0 - 0)

The Chicago Sun Times picked the Lake Zurich Bears as the number 9 team in the Chicago area before the season started; the Trojans were number 20.  On Monday night both teams proved they were deserving of the honor.  However, the number "9" turned out to be the deciding factor in the game.  CG staked the Bears to an early 9-0 lead and struggled the rest of the night to make up ground.  But, for the final three and a half quarters, the lady Trojans showed that they could hang with this tough team and played them pretty even the rest of the way.  The Trojans drained five 3-pointers, shot 9 for 11 from the line, forced 21 turnovers (only 12 for themselves), garnered 9 steals, and frustrated ball handlers all night.  Unfortunately, the Bears outrebounded the Trojans 29-13, outscored them in the paint 16-8, and assisted each other 15 times.  The rebounding stat alone spelled doom for CG.  Leading the way for the Trojans was Claire Jakubicek with 10 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, and 2 steals followed by Christina Bear with 6 points and 7 huge rebounds.  Liz Bart aided the cause with 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals as did Meg Straumann with 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Tori Sandstrom helped out with 2 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals.  After one period of play the score was 19-7 Bears.  At halftime it was 23-12 and when the third frame came to an end it was 36-22.  The Trojans managed to chip away in the third period getting the score to 26-20, but the Bears always found an answer to CG's flourishes.  The lady Trojans will wrap up the Thanksgiving tourney on Wednesday night against Hononegah.

Game #5:  Wednesday, Nov. 26th @ Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament

Trojans Finish Tourney Strong

CG - 58        Hononegah - 42     Record: 4 - 1   (0 - 0)

Last season two of CG's four losses came at the hands of the Hononegah Indians.  Their inside-outside barrage of offense spelled doom for the mighty Trojans.  But, the five seniors who led that terrific Indians squad a year ago are gone and the new look Trojans were ready to take advantage, and take advantage they did.  The young Trojans team connected on nine 3-pointers, outrebounded the Indians 30-21, forced 27 turnovers which included 18 steals, assisted each other 18 times, and outscored their opponent 26-10 in the paint.  It was a closely contested game for much of the first half.  CG led 18-15 after one period, 34-27 at the half, and 51-35 after three.  The two teams played an even fourth frame culminating in a 16 point victory for the Trojans.  Leading the way were four girls in double figures starting with Claire Jakubicek with 17 points including one 3-pointer, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals.  Next was Liz Bart who connected for 4 of the team's 3's and ended the game with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, a block, and 6 steals.  Following her was Meg Straumann with 12 points (two 3's), 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.  The other girl with a big night was Tori Sandstrom with 10 points (two 3's), 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block.  The Trojans continue to get better day by day, game by game.  Their next opponent will be Grayslake North on Tuesday evening at home.  Game time is 7:00 P.M.  The girls are excited to finally play on  their home turf.  Come out and enjoy what these young ladies do.

Game #6:  Tuesday, Dec. 2nd @ Home

Trojans Lance Knights

CG - 65        Grayslake North - 28      Record: 5 - 1   (0 - 0)

The lady Trojans put on a defensive clinic against the visiting Knights of Grayslake North on Tuesday evening in their home opener.  Jumping out to a 16-0 lead proved insurmountable and devastating for their opponents.  Cary-Grove forced 44 turnovers and held the Knights to just 9 of 35 (26%) shooting from the field.  CG also shot 63% from their foul line connecting on 24 of 38 attempts and scored repeatedly off of their defense finishing the game with 23 points off of turnovers.  The mighty Trojans also outscored the Knights 34-12 in the paint.  However, Grayslake was held in check and got absolutely nothing off of turnovers or their fastbreak.  The Trojans also shot 47% from the field, stole 23 passes, and outscored the Knights 27-18 off the bench.  It was a total team effort.  The score was 18-2 CG after one period of play, 40-10 at the half, and 48-21 after three.  Everyone on the team saw significant action on this night.  In little over two and a half quarters of play, the starters did their jobs.  Claire Jakubicek ended the night with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 6 steals followed by Tori Sandstrom with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals and Meg Straumann with 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals of her own.  Tino Bear chimed in with 6 points and 2 steals as well.  Kristin Guay helped out off the bench with 6 points hitting 6 of 8 free throws.  It was a nice tune-up for games to come.  The Trojans will get in three good practices as they prepare for the Johnsburg Skyhawks, their next opponent on Saturday night away.  It will be a good test to determine where they are at in their development as a team and it should be an exciting contest.  Game time is 7:00 P.M.

Game #7:  Saturday, Dec. 6th @ Johnsburg

Trojans Lose to Skyhawks

CG - 44        Johnsburg - 49      Record: 5 - 2   (0 - 0)

In probably one of the best games of the young season, the Trojans and Skyhawks duked it out for four rounds before the home team won by split decision.  Chuck Noll once said, "Leaving the game plan is a sign of panic, and panic is not in our game plan."  The visiting Trojans got away from the game plan for much of the first half and it cost them.  They trailed 17-10 after one period and 30-20 at the half.  The goal was to chip away at the lead in the third frame and to get back to what the Trojans do.  Well, they did just that and found themselves ahead after three quarters 36-33.  The Johnsburg faithful were stunned.  The final round was filled with excitement and the crowd watched as the score wavered back and forth the rest of the way.  The Trojans found themselves up by 2 with a little over a minute to play, but the Skyhawks hit a huge 3-pointer to take the lead and they never looked back.  It was an incredible contest between two very evenly matched teams and one the inexperienced Trojans will learn from as they move forward.  The Trojans shot 32% from the field to Johnsburg's 34%.  They mustered 28 rebounds to their opponent's 27.  They assisted each other 13 times while their adversaries did it 14 times.  They turned the ball over 23 times while Johnsburg did it 25 times.  They garnered 14 steals to their opponent's 11.  They outscored Johnsburg 28-20 in the paint and 13-7 off the bench.  The Trojans hit three 3's to Johnsburg's 4.   So, with all of these stats being so equal, what hurt the Trojans the most besides the slow start?  Well, the Skyhawks connected on 15 of 25 free throws to CG's meager 5 of 9.  Leading the way for Cary-Grove was Claire Jakubicek with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal.  Christina Bear followed her with 9 points along with Lizzy Dyrek who came up huge off the bench with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and a charge taken.  Liz Bart also helped with 7 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.  Karen Serowka came off the bench like Dyrek and contributed with 5 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.  Meg Straumann did her part as well with 4 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, a block, 5 steals and a charge taken.  Next up for the Trojans is Grayslake Central at home on Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 7:00 P.M.  Come out and watch some high energy basketball!

Game #8:  Wednesday, Dec. 10th @ Home

Trojans Rough Up Rams

CG - 75        Grayslake Central - 59      Record: 6 - 2   (0 - 0)

Cary-Grove defended its home turf once again thanks to timely defense and unstoppable offense.  The lady Trojans forced its typical 19 turnovers, scoring 18 points in transition and 10 points off of those Ram miscues.  They shot 14 of 17 (82%) from the charity stripe, 29 of 66 (44%) from the field, and outscored Grayslake Central 48-18 in the paint.  They also outrebounded the Rams 32-19, stole the ball 11 times, and assisted each other on baskets 20 times as well.  After one period of play, the score stood at 24-17 CG.  The two teams headed into the locker room at the half with the score still in favor of the Trojans 39-33.  Even after three quarters it was still fairly close at 55-45; however, the Rams eventually got worn down and CG scored in bunches in the fourth to secure the victory.  Leading the way for the Trojans was Claire Jakubicek with 23 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, and 4 steals followed by Tori Sandstrom with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal.  Sandstrom also had the ESPN play of the Day when she took the ball out of bounds under her own basket, couldn't find an open girl on the play, threw the ball off the back of her opponent, scored and got fouled.  Liz Bart did her part as well with 13 points, 2 rebounds, and an assist.  Also aiding in the win was Christina Bear with 7 points and 5 rebounds and Meg Straumann with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals.  Laura Chianakas helped the cause as well with 5 points of her own.  Next up for the Trojans is a tough Huntley Red Raiders team on Saturday night in Huntley at 7:00 P.M.

Game #9:  Saturday, Dec. 13th @ Huntley

Trojans Hang On To Down Red Raiders

CG - 67        Huntley - 63      Record: 7 - 2   (0 - 0)

Cary-Grove left the gymnasium Saturday night at Huntley a little dazed and confused after a wild fourth quarter of play in which they gave up 34 points to a team it had held to just 10 total points in the second and third periods combined.  But, it was another great learning experience for this rather inexperienced CG team, and it will serve them well when the tough conference schedule opens up in January.  After one period of action, it looked as if the Red Raiders would take control of the game and set the tone for the rest of it as they scored frequently and led 19-15 at the buzzer.  But, the visiting Trojans had plans of their own as they outscored the hosts 18-5 in the second frame and led 33-24 heading into the locker rooms at intermission.  They accomplished more of the same in the third stanza outscoring Huntley 17-5 and taking a commanding lead (or so they thought) 50-29 with just 8 minutes left in regulation.  Then, the wheels came loose for a while and Huntley took advantage as they went 13-14 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and hit seemingly every shot they tossed up.  When the dust settled and the smoke cleared, the Trojans had survived and took home another victory.  Leading the way for CG was Meg Straumann with 20 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals followed by Claire Jakubicek with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.  Next was Tori Sandstrom with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 3 steals along with Christina Bear with 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.  Also helping out was Liz Bart with 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 5 steals and Karen Serowka with 3 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals.  Lizzy Dyrek chimed in as well with 2 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists.  All in all, it was a good night and a good challenge in a hostile environment on the road for the Trojans.  Next up is a 3-point shooting machine, the Prairie Ridge Wolves on Tuesday evening at Cary-Grove at 7:00 P.M.

Game #10:  Tuesday, Dec. 16th @ Home

Trojans Tame Wolves

CG - 58        Prairie Ridge - 31      Record: 8 - 2   (0 - 0)

The Trojans came back home for this contest against a dangerous Prairie Ridge opponent.  CG knew of their potential to hit threes, a lot of threes.  The Wolves are a team you can never write off at any time during the game because of their ability to hit consecutive 3-pointers at any given time.  Thus, the philosophy for the Trojans heading into the contest was to keep up the full court pressure and not allow the Wolves open looks.  Prairie Ridge, on the other hand, took the opposite philosophy.  They figured they would not let CG pound them inside; they would give up the threes first.  Well, Cary-Grove's mind set worked out better than PR's.  They held the Wolves to just 16% shooting overall, only 13% from 3-point land.  On the flip side, CG shot 47% from the field, 36% from 3-point land as they connected on 8 of 22 attempts.  Four different players hit those eight 3's.  The Trojans defense also forced 25 turnovers and gave up zero fastbreak points and zero points off of turnovers.  Although they tried to stop the Trojans inside game all night, PR got outscored 26-6 in the paint anyway.  At the end of one period CG had already taken control of the game with a 17-7 lead.  At the half the lead had grown to 34-15 and by the end of the third it was 47-22.  Leading the way for CG was Tori Sandstrom with 17 points, including 3 of the team's 3-pointers, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.  Meg Straumann followed her up with 15 points, including three 3's of her own, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, and Claire Jakubicek contributed 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals as well.  The Trojans now prepare for the Mundelein Holiday Tournament which starts on Saturday.  Last year the Trojans won a thrilling overtime game with Conant to take 3rd place.  Their first game this year is against Streamwood at noon Saturday, Dec. 20th.

Game #11:  Saturday, Dec. 20th @ Mundelein Holiday Tournament

Trojans Start Tourney With Victory Over Sabres

CG - 69        Streamwood - 50      Record: 9 - 2   (0 - 0)

The Trojans got off the bus at Mundelein High School ready to play their opening round game against the Streamwood Sabres, a team they faced in the opening round of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament back in November.  Back then, it was the second game of the season for the Trojans, the first for the Sabres.  Many games later, both teams were prepared for what the other was going to do; the first half was a testament to that.  Both teams traded baskets for the entire first half.  The score stood in favor of the Sabres after one period at 18-17; but, by the half, the Trojans had regained the advantage at 40-34 and would not look back the rest of the game.  CG came out in the second half and did what they wanted to do in the first half, control the tempo of the game with their defense.  They did just that and only allowed 6 points in the third and 10 in the fourth.  They outscored their opponents 29-16 in the second half and cruised to victory.  The Trojans shot 41% from the field (25 of 61) and 63% from the foul line (15-24).  They connected on four 3-pointers, outrebounded Streamwood 38 to 19 (20 on the offensive glass), forced 25 turnovers, assisted each other 19 times, stole 17 passes, and outscored their opponents 38-24 in the paint.  Leading the way was Tori Sandstrom with a double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds.  She also had 4 assists and 5 steals.  Next was Claire Jakubicek with 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal.  Christina Bear got a double-double of her own with 11 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, and a steal.  Karen Serowka also helped out with 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal followed by Meg Straumann with 7 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals.  Liz Bart helped out also with 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.  Rounding out the scoring was Laura Chianakas with 3 points, Lizzy Dyrek with 2 points and 4 rebounds, and Jenna Logan with 2 points.  The lady Trojans now head into second round play against a good Glenbrook North team at 3:30 P.M. on Monday, Dec. 22, at Mundelein High School.

Game #12:  Monday, Dec. 22nd @ Mundelein Holiday Tournament

Trojans Dominate Spartans

CG - 76        Glenbrook North - 48      Record: 10 - 2   (0 - 0)

Recently the skies opened up and nature showed its fury with a tremendous snowfall that reeked havoc on the roads and caused many schools to shut down early for the holiday break.  Similarly, the Cary-Grove Trojans opened up the airways versus Glenbrook North and reeked havoc on its defense for the entire game setting the tone early by drilling 8 of 16 three pointers in the first half.  They finished the game with  nine 3's.  It was a game of total domination as CG led almost all statistical categories.  They shot 49% from the field and 35% from 3-point land.  Inside 10 feet they connected on 18 of 27 shots for an incredible 67%.  The Trojans also outrebounded the Spartans 30-17 with 16 of those on the offensive end, and they forced 27 turnovers, assisted each other 16 times, racked up 16 steals, and outscored their opponents 38-20 in the paint and 33-8 off the bench.  It was a total team effort that produced significant playing time for everyone on the team.  After one period of play the score was 23-13 in favor of the Trojans.  At the half, it was 43-26 and by the end of the third it was 61-31.  The starters were done for the night at the conclusion of the third and the reserves took over and enjoyed the final 8 minutes of play.  Many players found their way in the scoring column.  Claire Jakubicek led the way with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals followed by Meg Straumann with 9 points and 2 steals.  Tori Sandstrom did her thing again with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 4 steals and Liz Bart contributed as well with 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals.  Lizzy Dyrek helped out too with 7 points and 3 rebounds as did Karen Serowka with 6 points and 3 assists.  Laura Chianakas also chimed in with 6 points along with Christina Bear with 5 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  Kristin Guay came off the bench to score 4 points with 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Erin Lau also came off the bench to add 4 points and Alicia Lundstrom scored 3 points as well.  Rounding out the scoring was Alyssa Zintl with 2 points.  Seven different girls connected on 3-pointers:  Serowka and Chianakas each had two; Straumann, Sandstrom, Bart, Bear, and Lundstrom each had one.  Next up for the Trojans is a tough Waukegan team on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Mundelein High School at 1:30 P.M.

Game #13:  Tuesday, Dec. 23rd @ Mundelein Holiday Tournament

Trojans Control Bulldogs To Pick Up Win

CG - 61        Waukegan - 47      Record: 11 - 2   (0 - 0)

Cary-Grove came out with a defensive attitude in the first half of this third round game in the tournament in Mundelein and picked up the victory to put themselves in the semifinal round of play on Friday night at 6:30 P.M. against, more than likely, Hoffman Estates.  The win marks the second year in a row that CG has gotten to the final four in this very competitive tournament.  The Trojans did it with defense for the first 16 minutes of the game controlling ball handlers all half long and only allowing 16 first half points for the Bulldogs.  After one period the score was 14-8, but, by halftime the lead ballooned to 32-16.  Cary-Grove came out with the same intensity to start the third period and the lead grew to as many as 22 points, but the Bulldogs would not concede the win.  They surged up and down the court and cut into the lead many times, but they could only get as close as 9 before the Trojans found another way to score and keep the lead out of reach.  The score was 49-34 to start the fourth frame and CG hung on and hit its free throws down the stretch to secure the win.   It was a good battle for CG heading into the semifinal round on Friday.  Leading the way for the Trojans was Claire Jakubicek with 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals followed by Liz Bart with 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals.  Meg Straumann also helped the team to victory with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals as did Christina Bear with 7points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.  Tori Sandstrom did her part too with 5 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists.  CG connected on 13 of 16 free throws for 81% and also drilled four 3-pointers.  They had the advantage in rebounding 32-28 with half of theirs on the offensive end.  The defense came up big again forcing 30 turnovers while swiping 14 passes and scoring numerous times off of its press.  The Trojans also outscored their opponent 34-26 in the paint and 4-0 off the bench.   Now the lady Trojans will enjoy their two day holiday break and then get down to business again on Friday night as they play for a chance to make it to the championship game on Saturday evening against either host Mundelein or Libertyville.

Game #14:  Friday, Dec. 26th @ Mundelein Holiday Tournament

CG Downed By Hoffman Estates

CG - 47        Hoffman Estates - 58      Record: 11 - 3   (0 - 0)

Cary-Grove lost to a very good Hoffman Estates team Friday evening in Mundelein's first semifinal game of its holiday tournament.  The Hawks were led by Charleston-bound senior Megan Fischer with 26 points, 13 of 14 from the foul line.  The Trojans did a good job for three and a half quarters of play, but it was a 9-0 run by the Hawks in the second period that proved to be insurmountable the rest of the game.  After one frame, the score was dead even at 14.  By the half, fueled by the Hoffman Estates 9-0 run, CG found itself trailing 32-22 heading into the locker rooms for intermission.  But, they had been here before when they played Johnsburg earlier this season.  Down by 10 at the half, they discovered a way to get themselves back into the game; that would be the strategy in this game too.  CG tried chipping away at the lead and had it down to 9 at times, but Hoffman Estates would find other ways to score to keep the margin at 10 or more.  At the conclusion of three periods, the score was 43-29 in favor of the Hawks.  Though CG managed to hit some timely 3-pointers in the fourth, it just wasn't enough.  It was a valiant effort by the Trojans though and a great learning experience for the upcoming conference schedule.  Leading the way for the Trojans was Liz Bart with 15 points, all on 3-pointers, followed by Claire Jakubicek with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists, Tori Sandstrom with 8 points and 4 rebounds, Christina Bear with 5 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, Lizzy Dyrek with 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists, and Meg Straumann with 3 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.  Now the lady Trojans will regroup and play for third place against a tough Libertyville team on Saturday night, Dec. 27, at 6:30 P.M.

Game #15:  Saturday, Dec. 27th @ Mundelein Holiday Tournament

Trojans Bitten By Wildcats; Settle For 4th Place

CG - 55        Libertyville - 64      Record: 11 - 4   (0 - 0)

At the halfway point in the season, Cary-Grove has a lot to be thankful for and has had a handful of games like this one that they can learn from to make themselves even better for the conference run in a couple of weeks.  The speedy and well-disciplined Libertyville team, very much like the Hoffman Estates team, took care of the basketball all game long and punished the Trojans in the lane and at the foul line.  CG could not contain the penetration by their opponents and ended up paying for it to the tune of 39 total free throws, 25 of which the Wildcats sank.  Libertyville played the style of basketball Cary-Grove hopes to be playing by the time conference hits.  Unfortunately for the Trojans, they only got to the line 10 times, though they sank 7 of them.  Libertyville shot 42% from the field, CG only 36%.  CG did manage to outrebound the Wildcats 31-28 and played them almost dead even in the paint scoring 28 points to their 30 and in assists at 13 to 14.  Where the Trojans struggled was with their feet on defense.  They played hands first instead of feet first and racked up 24 fouls to Libertyville's 15.  CG did hit six 3-pointers which helped their cause, but the constant fouling did them in.  However, they will learn from this game and move on.  There was plenty to be proud of too.  Meg Straumann and Claire Jakubicek led the team with 16 points each including three huge 3-pointers.  Straumann also had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal while Jakubicek had 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals.  Also helping out was Tori Sandstrom with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks and Liz Bart with 8 points, including two big 3-pointers, and 3 rebounds.  Lizzy Dyrek aided the team too with 6 points and 4 rebounds.  In addition, Christina Bear racked up 5 assists while Laura Chianakas and Jenna Logan came off the bench to secure 3 rebounds apiece.  After one period of play the score was 14-13 CG.  At the half it was 27-22 Libertyville.  At the conclusion of three frames it was 38-37 Wildcats and then Libertyville knocked down shot after shot and free throw after free throw to put up a 26 spot in the fourth to secure the win.  However, CG hung in there scoring 18 big points of its own to keep it close all the way until the end.  With half of the season over, the Trojans now get 8 days of preparation for a tough Buffalo Grove team heading to Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 8th, at 7:00 P.M.

Sandstrom, Jakubicek, & Straumann Named All-Tournament

Tori Sandstrom, Claire Jakubicek, and Meg Straumann were named to the All-tournament team for the Mundelein Holiday Classic Tournament.  Sandstrom's per game averages were 10 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks.  She shot an incredible 52.8% from the field, 50% from 3-point range, and 83.3% from the foul  line.  Jakubicek's per game averages were 15 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.6 steals.  She shot an amazing 50.8% from the field.  Straumann's per game averages were 9.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 2.4 steals.  She shot 43.6% from the field, 41.2% from 3-point range, and an outstanding 83.3% from the charity stripe.  These deserving young ladies know that it takes ten hands to make a basket, and they would be the first to thank their teammates for their success.  They will continue to work hard along with the team and make themselves into the best players, teammates, and people they can possibly become.  Together they can conquer anything!

Jakubicek Named Daily Herald Player of the Week and

Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week

Claire Jakubicek was picked Daily Herald Player of the Week for Dec. 29-Jan. 3 thanks to her incredible 5 game run at the Mundelein Holiday Tournament.  She averaged 15 points per game, including a high game of 20 versus Waukegan and was also named all-tournament.  Jakubicek followed up that honor by becoming the Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week for Jan. 5-9 thanks to her all-tournament play at Mundelein.  She helped the Trojans go 3-2 and finish 4th overall.

Trojans Finally Do In Bison

CG - 70        Buffalo Grove - 65      Record: 12 - 4   (0 - 0)

No, Buffalo Grove does not have its trio of all-staters nor its Hall of Fame coach anymore, but they are still a force to be reckoned with, and they proved it Thursday night in Cary.  If fact, they got off to a red-hot start beyond the pinpoint shooting of Heather Nisbet who connected on her first five 3-point attempts in the opening quarter to propel her young Bison team to a 19-10 advantage after eight minutes of play.  The Bison continued to make life difficult for the Trojans in the second frame as Nisbet hit her 6th consecutive three and two other teammates followed with two more.  But, CG knew of and believed in the "law of averages".  Sooner or later, Nisbet and her team just had to cool off and they did, in part thanks to the Trojans' relentless pressure and foul trouble for Nisbet.  The Trojans fought an uphill battle all evening although they made it a 6 point game at the half, 38-32 in BG's favor.  In the third period the Bison regained some momentum and recaptured its double-digit lead and held on to it until late in the quarter until CG made its run to close out three stanzas only down 53-50.  Then, the fateful fourth began.  The atmosphere in the gymnasium was at a post-season level with the packed stands full of fans and alumni screaming and hollering and willing the lady Trojans to victory.  CG turned up the defensive pressure scoring 20 points in the process while holding BG to 12 and the win was secured. After all was said and done, the Trojans had outrebounded the Bison 32-24, forced 20 BG turnovers, grabbed 14 steals, accumulated 15 assists, and outscored BG in the paint 48-18 and off the bench 15-5.  Leading the way was Claire Jakubicek with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals followed by Liz Bart with 13 points, including three huge 3-pointers, and 5 steals.  Still recovering from strep, Christina Bear came off the bench to give the game-saving performance with 13 points and 5 rebounds while Lizzy Dyrek filled in for her in the starting role scoring 6 points and pulling down 6 rebounds. Tori Sandstrom also helped out with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals along with Meg Straumann with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  It was a total team effort and gives the Trojans some much needed momentum heading into their final non-conference crossover game with Crystal Lake Central on Saturday night over there at 7:00 P.M. before they gear up for the conference opener at the Eagles' Nest in Jacobs on Tuesday.  The Trojans showed little rust after their long lay-off since the last holiday tournament game in Mundelein, and they only plan on getting better every day.  Come out and watch some exciting basketball action!

Game #17:  Saturday, Jan. 10th @ Crystal Lake Central

Trojans Tackle Tenacious Tigers

CG - 45        Crystal Lake Central - 34      Record: 13 - 4   (0 - 0)

Ask any of the lady Trojans about this game and they'll tell you that things didn't really go as planned, but, in the end, they won.  From a defensive standpoint, the game plan was followed for the most part, but on offense, it was not.  Failing to make appropriate reads and take appropriate shots caused a lot of confusion for CG on the night and the newly energized CLC Tigers took advantage of the Trojan miscues.  However, the outcome of the game was never in question and CG knew it as they led for almost the entire contest.  The Trojans outrebounded the Tigers 34-24, collected 13 steals, and forced 25 turnovers.   After one period the score was 13-7 CG; at the half it was 25-16.  Concluding three quarters the lead was only 7 at 29-22, but senior Tori Sandstrom hit 6 of 7 free throws in the fourth stanza to secure the victory.  Sandstrom finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds followed by Liz Bart with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals; Meg Straumann with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 steals; Claire Jakubicek with 7 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists; and Lizzy Dyrek with 3 points and 3 rebounds.  Christina Bear also contributed 5 rebounds and 2 steals of her own.  The Trojans now get set to begin the conference season versus Jacobs on Tuesday evening at Jacobs.  Game time is 7:00 P.M.  Cary-Grove will be prepared for what should be an incredibly exciting FVC Valley Divison conference schedule.  Four teams will battle it out for the title and all have legitimate shots at getting it done.

Game #18:  Tuesday, Jan. 13th @ Jacobs

Trojans Ground Eagles In Conference Opener

CG - 64        Jacobs - 49      Record: 14 - 4   (1 - 0)

The lady Trojans know that having 3 out of 5 conference games on the road to start the season will not be easy, but they also know if they can take care of business on the road early, they get to come home for 3 of the following 5.  So, CG took care of business in their conference opener in impressive fashion.  Jacobs struggled all night long to break the pressure defense put on by the energetic Trojans.  In fact, the Golden Eagles committed 35 turnovers while CG took very good care of the ball when it was in their possession.  CG shot 40% from the field, connected on five 3-pointers, accumulated 17 steals and 10 assists, and scored 34 points in the paint.  Playing on the road, especially at Jacobs, can be a daunting task, but CG displayed a calm, patient, demeanor all night long to get the job done.  They would not be denied.  After one period of play, the game was close with the Trojans holding a slight lead at 17-13.  Then, CG took charge, and at the half the score was 32-20.  The Eagles had turned the ball over 18 times by the half and the Trojans protected the ball fiercely only giving it up 5 times.  In the third frame, CG poured it on building its lead to as many as 16, so that by the conclusion of the quarter the score stood at 46-30.  Cary-Grove knew all too well that Jacobs could never be counted out and would never give up.  The Eagles stormed back in the fourth cutting the lead to 8 at one point, but they would get no closer.  The Trojans hit 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.  Leading the way was Meg Straumann with 23 points, including three 3-pointers, 5 assists, and 3 steals.  Also helping the cause was Claire Jakubicek with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals; Tori Sandstrom with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; Christina Bear with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals; and Liz Bart with 5 points, 2 assists, and 3 steals.  Overall, it was a total team effort, the kind of effort that could take them far and the kind of effort they were all waiting for.  Next up for the Trojans are the Blue Streaks of Woodstock on Friday night on the road at 7:00 P.M.  Led by Molly Whiting, a prolific scoring threat every time she touches the ball, the Streaks will present yet another difficult opponent away from home.

Game #19:  Friday, Jan. 16th @ Woodstock

Trojans Survive Wild Game Against Blue Streaks

CG - 72        Woodstock - 63      Record: 15 - 4   (2 - 0)

The Cary-Grove Trojans came into a very hostile environment Friday night versus the Woodstock Blue Streaks and left the victors after an evening of basketball that produced two 30+ point scorers, Molly Whiting of Woodstock with 36 and Claire Jakubicek of Cary-Grove with 31.  Though the confines were less than pleasant at times, the Trojans found a way to get the job done without too much panic.  On the night, CG shot 41% from the field, 33% from 3-point range (connecting on 6), and 62% from the charity stripe (18 of 29).  They outrebounded their opponent 37-29, succeeded on 14 assists, forced 20 turnovers and stole 14 passes.  The excitement and energy from the opening tip was evident and the battle was on.  After one period of play, the Blue Streaks were on top 16-13; by the half, it was CG up 34-32.  Then, something started to click for the Trojans in the third as they turned up their defense a notch, forced numerous Woodstock miscues, put together a 15-0 run and led 55-39 after three.  Of course, the Blue Streaks would not give in and they stormed back during the fourth and final frame but could only manage to get the lead down to 6 at times.  The Trojans held on and hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the win once again.  Leading the way was Claire Jakubicek who had a career high with 31 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks and 4 steals.  Liz Bart did her thing to the tune of 16 points, including 4 huge 3's, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals followed by Meg Straumann with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.  Lizzy Dyrek came off the bench in a big way with 6 points and 9 rebounds while Laura Chianakas did her part off the bench as well with 4 points and 2 rebounds.  Tori Sandstrom also contributed 3 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists while Christina Bear and Karen Serowka aided in the victory too, each getting 3 rebounds.  The Trojans know they have to find some consistency on the defensive end of the court in order to make a run the rest of the season, but they are young and hungry and will find a way to get the job done.  Next up for the Trojans is a showdown with the Crystal Lake South Gators on Tuesday at home at 7:00 P.M.  This should prove to be another great Valley Division game, so don't miss it!

Jakubicek Named McHenry County Sports.com Athlete of the Week and a Daily Herald Basketball Focus Week 5 MVP Runner-up

Claire Jakubicek was named McHenry County Sports.com Athlete of the Week for Jan. 19-24 by scoring 16 points in a big win versus conference rival Jacobs and a career-high 31 points in an even bigger win against Woodstock.  She was 8 of 10 from the foul line in the Woodstock game, had 14 points in the first half and 11 in the third quarter to help her team to victory.  Thanks to her performances at the Mundelein Holiday Tournament and her recent outbursts, Jakubicek was also named a Daily Herald Basketball Focus (go to dailyherald.com/mvp/girls) Week 5 MVP Runner-up along with Mundelein's Mallory Feece, St. Charles North's Kelsey Smith, and Hinsdale Central's Toni Kokenis.  Ashley Wilson of Wheeling was the MVP.

Straumann Named Daily Herald Player of the Week and

Trojans Beat Themselves, Lose to Gators

CG - 48        Crystal Lake South - 58      Record: 15 - 5   (2 - 1)

Tuesday night's game provided two very evenly matched teams.  At the end of the evening most of the stats were deadlocked.  Both teams shot a little over 40% from the field; CG hit 5 threes while South hit 3; South had 22 rebounds to CG's 20; South had 12 assists to CG's 11; CG had 12 steals to South's 11; CG had 16 points in the paint to South's 12.  So, what did the Trojans in?  They shot 9 of 22 from the foul line for 41% while the Gators connected on 25 of 37 for 68%.  CG also turned the ball over 26 times although they did force 20 miscues for the visitors as well.  The game started out great for the Trojans as they scored off the tip and jumped out to a 10-1 advantage.  Then, the Gators came back.  They led 17-12 by the end of the period.  CG re-established itself in the second frame and led 30-28 at the half.  Unfortunately, the third stanza proved fatal for the Trojans as they were outscored 15-6 giving the Gators a somewhat comfortable lead at 43-36 to begin the final quarter.  Again, the hosts were outscored and the result was a 10 point loss.  During one stretch in the third period, the Trojans misfired on 8 free throws in a row and never fully recovered from that point on.  Leading the way for CG was Claire Jakubicek with 14 points and 2 steals followed by Christina Bear with 13 points and 4 rebounds.  Meg Straumann also helped with 12 points and 4 assists while Tori Sandstrom chimed in as well with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals.  Liz Bart aided the cause too with 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 steals.  Now the young lady Trojans will regroup, learn from their mistakes, and get ready to play Dundee-Crown on Friday night at home.  Game time is 7:00 P.M.

Trojans Handle Chargers

CG - 74        Dundee-Crown - 33      Record: 16 - 5   (3 - 1)

The lady Trojans handled their business Friday night with the visitors from DC.  They jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they cruised to a decisive 41 point victory.  Defense was the focal point on the evening as CG forced the Chargers to commit 30 turnovers, many of which led to easy baskets for the hosts.  The Trojans shot 49% from the field and 40% from 3-point range.  They outrebounded the Chargers 32-22, picked up 22 assists and 13 steals, and outscored them 44-16 in the paint and 21-6 off the bench.  After one period of play, the score read 21-10 CG and by the half it grew to 35-18.  The third quarter was a dead heat as both teams only managed 10 points apiece, so the fourth frame began with the score at 45-28.  Then, the Trojans really decided to perform and they exploded for 29 points in the final stanza.  Leading the way for CG was Christina Bear with 21 points and 3 rebounds followed by Claire Jakubicek with 18 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks, and 4 steals.  Lizzy Dyrek aided the cause as well with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals while Meg Straumann added 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Erin Lau helped out off the bench with 6 points, and Liz Bart and Jenna Logan each had 5 points.  Bart also racked up 7 assists.  The Trojans got a little help from their friends in Jacobs as the Golden Eagles knocked off the visiting Crystal Lake South Gators on a buzzer beater forcing a three way tie for first place in the conference with Jacobs, South, and CG all knotted at 3-1.  Next up for the Trojans is a tenacious McHenry team on Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. in the Warriors backyard.  The rest of the conference schedule should prove to be exciting.  Don't miss it!

Game #22:  Tuesday, Jan. 27th @ McHenry

Trojans Find A Way To Beat Warriors

CG - 36        McHenry - 26      Record: 17 - 5   (4 - 1)

If winning basketball games was easy, everyone would be doing it; sometimes, things just don't go according to plan and the good teams have to find other ways to get the job done, and that's exactly what CG had to do Tuesday night in McHenry.  The Warriors had an obvious philosophy from the start of the game:  slow the pace to a crawl, sag off on defense and force the Trojans to rain three's, dribble weave on offense and hope CG makes a mistake, and, as a result, frustrate this driving team and perhaps steal a win.  Well, for three quarters the gamble by the Warriors paid off.  Cary-Grove had a decent first period outscoring McHenry 14-6, but then it got real cold in the gym for the Trojans.  They would not have scored a point in the second frame had it not been for Claire Jakubicek's free throw with no time left on the clock before halftime.  In fact, the Trojans were 0-11 from the field and headed into the locker room up only 15-14.  No one wanted to win the third stanza as both teams scored 6 points apiece during that 8 minute stretch and the score stood 21-20 at its conclusion.  But, the fourth quarter proved fatal for McHenry.  CG turned up the heat and said enough is enough forcing numerous Warrior miscues (34 in all on the evening for McHenry) which led to many easy scores in a row culminating in the final margin of victory.  Maybe CG escaped with one, but, maybe they're just a good team that found another way to finish the job.  McHenry's gamble nearly paid off.  The Trojans shot just 2 of 17 from beyond the arc, 4 of 10 from the foul line, and looked lost at times on both ends of the floor.  However, if you're going to gamble, you have to accept the fact that you may lose anyway.  Leading the way for CG was Claire Jakubicek with 18 points, 11 of those in the fateful fourth, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals.  Also helping the cause was Liz Bart with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 6 steals; Lizzy Dyrek with 4 points; Christina Bear with 3 points and 3 rebounds; Meg Straumann with 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 6 steals; Karen Serowka with 2 points; and Tori Sandstrom with 3 rebounds and 5 steals.   Next, it's round two of the conference schedule beginning Friday night at home versus a rejuvenated Jacobs squad fresh off of wins against Crystal Lake South and Dundee-Crown.  It will be a battle to the end.  Game time is 7:00 P.M.

It's Raining 3's!  Trojans Knock Off Eagles Again

CG - 67        Jacobs - 60      Record: 18 - 5   (5 - 1)

Before the game, as usual, Liz Bart took to the court early to practice her favorite shot, the 3-pointer.  Little did she know she would propel her team to victory later that night by nailing 9 of 10 three's to tie for 12th place in IHSA history for most 3-pointers in a game.  Her performance set a CG single game record for three's in a game and probably a conference record.  But, ask her after the game about how she did it and she'll defer to the team.  Her teammates watched in awe all evening long, but they also knew that it took some timely driving and dishing to set the table for Bart's achievement.  They all know "it takes ten hands to make a basket" (thanks for that one John Wooden).  The Trojans finished the game hitting 11 of 15 three's for an astounding 73%.  However, they also shot 46% from the field, outrebounded Jacobs 28-23, picked up 18 assists, forced 20 turnovers, grabbed 10 steals, and outscored their opponents 10-0 off the bench.  Overall, it was a typical Trojan production.  After one period of play the score was 14-13 Jacobs, but by the half it was 38-33 CG.  The third quarter was a tough one for both teams as they managed only 19 points between them; CG only led 46-44 at its conclusion.  The fourth frame was also a battle that finally ended with the Trojans pulling out the win at home.  Leading the way, of course, was Liz Bart with 29 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals followed by Claire Jakubicek with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal.  Meg Straumann was next in the scoring column with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.  Lizzy Dyrek, off the bench again, did her thing with 7 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.  While those ladies were busy scoring, Tori Sandstrom cleaned the glass with 10 huge rebounds, 5 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals.  It was a total team effort once again and puts the Trojans right where they want to be in the conference hunt.  Next up is a rematch with Woodstock on Wednesday night at home at 7:00 P.M.  If you've been missing out on coming to games, well, then, you've been missing out!

Bart Named Daily Herald Player of the Week, Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week, and Daily Herald Basketball Focus Week 10 MVP

Liz Bart was selected as the two papers' player and athlete of the week for February 2-7 thanks to her stellar performances against McHenry and Jacobs last week.  In the  McHenry game she scored 6 points, had 6 steals, and picked up 3 rebounds and 3 assists.  But, she saved her best show for the second meeting with Jacobs when she scored 29 points, including a school and conference record-setting 9 of 10 three pointers, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  The Jacobs performance also landed her in the IHSA record books; she is now tied for 12th for most 3's in a game all-time.  Those performances also earned her the Daily Herald Basketball Focus Week 10 MVP distinction (go to daily herald.com/mvp/girls) along with runners-up Lydia Bauer of Lake Zurich, Megan O'Neill of Maine West, Kasey Reaber of Driscoll, and Devin Vaughn of West Aurora.

Trojans Take Care Of Business Versus Blue Streaks

CG - 57        Woodstock - 28     Record: 19 - 5   (6 - 1)

The Cary-Grove Trojans defended their home turf once again by soundly defeating the Woodstock Blue Streaks on Wednesday evening.  The win keeps them tied with Crystal Lake South in the conference race; the two teams will meet Saturday night at Gator Alley to see who can gain some momentum in the journey towards the crown by handing the other team its second conference loss.  CG came out strong to start the game versus Woodstock.  Their pressure gave the Blue Streaks fits all night long forcing them to turn over the ball on numerous occasions and helping the Trojans get many easy baskets.  As the game went on, the lead grew and grew.  After one period of play the score stood 11-7 CG; by the half, thanks in large part to the pressure defense, the margin had grown to 33-15.  From there, the Trojans showed no mercy.  The third quarter ended with them ahead 44-19, the benches cleared, and the rest is history. Overall, it was another great team victory for the Trojans.  Leading the way was Claire Jakubicek with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 8 steals followed by Liz Bart with 13 points, including 3 of 3 from three point land, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.  Then, it was Tori Sandstrom with 12 points and 2 rebounds along with Christina Bear with 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.  Meg Straumann also helped out with 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals as did Lizzy Dyrek and Laura Chianakas with 7 and 4 rebounds of their own.   The win sets up the showdown this weekend with South.  Don't miss this one!  Game time is 7:00 P.M.

Game #25:  Saturday, Feb. 7th @ Crystal Lake South

Trojans Stumble Again Versus Gators

CG - 53        Crystal Lake South - 66      Record: 19 - 6   (6 - 2)

The Trojans took to the floor at Gator Alley Saturday night brimming with confidence and ready to get revenge for a loss at home earlier in the season, but, it was not to be.  CG could not convert on numerous lay-up opportunities and it hurt them all night long.  For the evening, the Trojans shot just 7 of 31 from inside 10 feet and just 4 of 15 from behind the arc, two glaring stats that are usually not the norm for this high-powered team.  Again, like the first game, most stats were almost dead even.  Cary hit 23 of 34 free throws to South's 27 of 34.  Cary amassed 25 rebounds to South's 26.  Cary turned the ball over 14 times to South's 13.  Cary stole 10 passes to South's 7.  Both teams committed 22 fouls.  So, what was the downfall this time?  Well, the overall shooting percentage of 26% was the nemesis and resulted in South outscoring the Trojans in the paint 28 to 14, which accounted for the margin of victory at the end.  But, the young Trojans have nothing to hang their heads about.  They got the exact shots they wanted.  They proved once again that they are a force to be reckoned with this year and for years to come.  They stuck together and weathered the storms that occur in every game.  And, they learned a great deal that will help them the rest of this season and into the playoffs.  After one period of play the score was 15-10 South.  In the second period, it looked as if the Gators would put the Trojans to bed early as they took a commanding 30-16 lead, but, CG found a way to make it a 6 point game by the half with the score still in favor of South 34-28.  Then, a very cold quarter hit for both teams as they only managed 15 points between them, and after three frames concluded, the score was 43-34 Gators.  After such a dismal third stanza, both teams got it together to produce a great final period scoring 42 points between the two and culminating in a 13-point win for South.  Leading the way for the Trojans was Claire Jakubicek with a double-double of 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 steals.  Following her was Christina Bear with 10 points and 2 rebounds along with Tori Sandstrom with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks.  Also helping the cause was Meg Straumann with 8 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals and Liz Bart with 3 points and 2 rebounds.  The Trojans look for their 20th win of the season on Tuesday night at Dundee-Crown at 7:00 P.M. and play their final regular season game on Friday evening at home versus McHenry.

Game #26:  Tuesday, Feb. 10th @ Dundee-Crown

Trojans Take Care Of Chargers Again

CG - 64        Dundee-Crown - 34      Record: 20 - 6   (7 - 2)

The Cary-Grove Trojans took to the court Tuesday evening in Charger country and came away with a milestone win, win number 20.  It is a feat accomplished by few teams throughout the course of a grueling season and one this year's squad is tremendously proud of.  The Trojans did it with a stifling, stingy full court defense and a devastating, pushy offense.  The final team stats for CG read:  43% shooting from the field, 31 rebounds, 19 assists, 31 turnovers forced, and 20 steals.  But, the decisive stats had to be that CG outscored DC 44-14 in the paint and 14-8 off the bench.  The Chargers came out hard on senior night and gave CG a run for its money in the first quarter as it ended with CG only up 13-12.  The Trojans found their swagger in the second outscoring DC 20-8 and took a sizeable lead into the locker room at the half, 33-20.  After a rousing halftime pep talk, CG came out fired up and ready to destroy its opponent in the second half.  They dumped 19 points on the Chargers in the third and led 52-31 heading into the final frame and the rest is history.  Leading the way  for the Trojans was Liz Bart with 13 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals; Tori Sandstrom with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal; Meg Straumann with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals; Christina Bear with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals; birthday girl Claire Jakubicek with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists; and Kristin Guay with 6 points and 2 rebounds.  Cary-Grove still has a shot at a share of the conference crown if they win Friday night at home versus McHenry and South loses at Woodstock.  They couldn't ask for anything more than to be in the race until the end.  Maybe the basketball gods will make it so.  Let's wait and see.  Regardless of what happens, this Trojan team has carved out its own place in history at CG already.  Come out Friday night to watch a great game at 7:00 P.M., but, more importantly, to honor 5 senior girls who will play their final contest in Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

Trojans Find A Way To Beat McHenry

CG - 56        McHenry - 48      Record: 21 - 6   (8 - 2)

The Cary-Grove Trojans had to dig deep to discover a way to walk away with the victory in this one.  McHenry came out inspired and believing they could hand CG a loss in the final conference game of the season.   However, good teams have to get creative at times to persevere and win and that's just what the Trojans did.  After all was said and done, the Trojans forced 23 Warrior turnovers, stole 15 Warrior passes, and outscored the Warriors 42-10 off the bench.   The Warriors jumped on the Trojans in the first quarter and led at its conclusion 13-12.  In the second frame it looked as if McHenry would run away with the game as they quickly bursted out to a 23-14 lead prompting a timeout for the home team.  But, the Trojans held it together and went into halftime up 30-29.  CG then tried to build its own lead in the third, but McHenry hung around all night and would not go away.  At the end of three periods, the score stood 46-39 CG.  The fourth quarter was played almost to a draw, 10-9 CG, and the Trojans exhaled a sigh of relief knowing they got a gift.  It was senior night at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium and all five Trojan seniors started:  Erin Lau, Kelly Koch, Kristin Guay, Alicia Lundstrom, and Tori Sandstrom.  They took to the court to a stirring round of applause, and they finished the game together to even more deserved applause.  Leading the way for CG was Claire Jakubicek with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals; Meg Straumann with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals; Tori Sandstrom with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals; Christina Bear with 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks; Kelly Koch with 6 points on two 3-pointers; Lizzy Dyrek with 4 points and 4 rebounds; Liz Bart with 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals; and Laura Chianakas with a point and 3 rebounds.  The lady Trojans completed the regular season in fine fashion and in second place in the conference.  They now prepare to travel to Warren Township High School on Tuesday night for their first round regional game versus the host team Warren at 8:00 P.M.  The three-point contest will commence first with a scheduled start time of 7:20 P.M. if the first game does not take longer than anticipated.  Come out and support CG as they pursue their first post-season win.

Congrats To The Lower Levels!

The Cary-Grove freshman and sophomore teams completed great seasons of their own once again.  The freshmen did their thing to the tune of a 14-6 overall record and a 6-2 conference tri-championship record with Jacobs and Crystal Lake South.  The sophomores repeated what they did last season with an overall record of 20-2 and a 10-0 conference championship record.  The future looks bright and we are all excited!  Congrats ladies and coaches.  Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.  Keep working to continue the winning tradition that is Cary-Grove girls basketball.

Game #28:  Tuesday, Feb. 17th @ 4A Warren Regional (Semifinal)

Trojans Stun Hosts In OT To Make It To Championship

CG - 61        Warren - 57      Record: 22 - 6   (8 - 2)

The Trojans weren't supposed to win; they weren't supposed to be here.  Warren, despite its lower seed, was the home team with all the talent in the world.  They had the tougher schedule and had beaten some very good teams during the course of the season.  However, the Trojans had their share of tough opponents too, and they had been put in every imaginable situation except one, overtime.  Well, when the final buzzer sounded it was the visiting CG team that emerged the victors.  The evening started out well as CG had Liz Bart, Meg Straumann, and Christina Bear move on in the 3-point contest prior to the game.  The Trojans now had a reason to show up on Thursday night, but they wanted a better reason than that and they got it.  Spurred on by some stellar defense, especially in the third quarter when they held the hosts to just 3 points, the Trojans kept their composure and poise to pull off a great win.  On the night, the Trojans shot 48% from the field, 43% from 3-point range, and 76% from the line.  They picked up 9 assists, 10 steals, and 29 rebounds en route to victory.  They also outscored the much taller Warren team 32-26 in the paint.  The first frame ended with the Blue Devils up 13-12.  Thanks to Meg Straumann's buzzer beater just before the half, the Trojans took a two-point lead, 27-25, heading into the intermission.  Then, CG did what it does best, play tough defense, in the third to shut down Warren and take a comfortable lead, 38-28, to begin the final stanza in regulation.  The proud hosts would not go down without a fight and they stormed all the way back hitting a buzzer beater of their own, a 3-pointer, at the end of fourth to send the game into overtime.  From there, the Trojans scored the first 5 points of the extra quarter on their way to outscoring the Blue Devils 13-9 to secure the win.  Leading the way for the Trojans was Meg Straumann with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.  Following her was Liz Bart with 13 points, including all three of CG's 3-pointers, and 5 rebounds.  Claire Jakubicek did her thing too with 9 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 steals as did Tori Sandstorm with 8 points and 2 rebounds of her own.  Lizzy Dyrek also contributed with 7 points and 2 rebounds along with Christina Bear with 5 points and 5 rebounds.  Kristin Guay came off the bench and played some incredibly huge minutes when CG's posts got into foul trouble.  She scored 2 points and picked up 1 assist.  The lady Trojans will now face the number 3 seeded, the highest seeded team in the tourney, Mundelein for the Regional Championship on Thursday at 7:30 P.M.  If you haven't been to a game all year, don't miss this one!

Game #29:  Thursday, Feb. 19th @ 4A Warren Regional (Championship)

Trojans Fall To Mustangs

CG - 49        Mundelein - 61      Record: 22 - 7   (8 - 2)

The Cary-Grove Trojans put forth a valiant effort but could not get a lead in the regional championship versus the highly respected Mundelein Mustangs.  It was a battle of 22-6 versus 25-4 and it lived up to its billing and gave the young Trojans more experience to build on for the future.  CG struggled to gain its composure early on and it cost them down the stretch, but they never conceded the victory at any time during the contest.  They fought fiercely throughout the evening to prove that they belonged in this very difficult regional and they succeeded at that.  The final numbers were certainly in favor of the home team on this night, but CG had its moments too.  The Trojans connected on six 3-pointers, stayed with the Mustangs in rebounds at 28, picked up 13 assists and 6 steals, forced 14 turnovers, and outscored their opponent 13-0 off the bench.  The first quarter went the Mustangs way and they enjoyed a 16-10 lead at its conclusion.  By the half, their lead had grown to 34-25, but the Trojans would have an answer in the second half.  CG outscored Mundelein 16-14 in the third to cut the lead to 7 at 48-41 to begin the final frame.  However, the Trojans could get no closer than 6 the rest of the way as the Mustangs secured their second straight regional title.  Leading the way for CG was Liz Bart with 13 points, including four 3-pointers, and 4 rebounds followed by Meg Straumann with 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists (she also will move on to the sectional 3-point shooting contest on Tuesday evening at Barrington High School beginning at approximately 6:40).  Claire Jakubicek helped the cause also with 8 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals as did Lizzy Dyrek with 6 points and 3 rebounds.  Tori Sandstrom chipped in as well with 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals and so did Christina Bear with 3 points and 6 rebounds.  Laura Chianakas came off the bench to score 3 points with 3 rebounds and Karen Serowka and Kristin Guay each scored 2 points.  Though the lady Trojans didn't pick up any of the hardware they were hoping for, they have a lot to be proud of and excited about for next season.  Sadly, they must say goodbye to 5 great seniors:  Tori Sandstrom, Kelly Koch, Alicia Lundstrom, Erin Lau, and Kristin Guay.  They were tremendous assets to the program over the last four years and they will certainly be missed.  We wish them all the best of luck in the future!  Remember the words of the immortal Dr. Seuss:  "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.  Trojans, you have a lot to smile about!
