(How to Register)
The goal of Driver Education in the high school is the development of traffic citizens who will be competent and responsible users of the highway transportation system.
Driver Education is a three-phase program: classroom (which is required), simulator, and behind-the-wheel. The simulator and behind-the-wheel phases are not required, but are offered to any student who desires to take these phases of the program. The classroom work stresses safety and attitudes for safe driving. A student must have a minimum of 30 clock hours to receive credit. The simulator phase teaches perception, habits and skills. A student must have 12 clock hours or that equivalent to receive credit (4 hours of simulator equals 1 hour of behind-the-wheel time). The behind-the-wheel phase teaches safety and competent driving practices in actual on-the-street situations. The programs combine 12 hours of simulation with 3 hours of behind-the-wheel instructions. Students taking the classroom phase previous to the behind-the-wheel simulator phases should plan to finish both parts within one year after enrolling in the classroom phase. Students should be 16 years of age or reaching 16 upon completion of the course. Driver Education is also offered during the summer session. A student is required to have a Social Security Number to obtain a permit or an operator's license.
Note: In years when there are limitations created by a lack of facilities or staff, enrollment priority is established on consideration of class standing, time of completion of the classroom phase, and age of the student.
